Hi all
Was wondering if anyone has any advice re knee supports-- to use or not to use? And which ones are best if the advice is to use?

Take care Smile

Hi Julie,
I have not heard of anyone using a knee support because of ra.
My sister has a knee support, and she also has ra, but she had a nasty accident a bout 4yrs ago and smashed has knee and her surgeon suggested the support, nothing to do with rheumatology.
She had her knee measured etc. etc.
I would ask your rheumatology team about using one to see what they suggest, just to be on the safe side.

My other half uses a knee support but she has OSTEO arthritis. So checking with your GP / rheumy / physio would be a good idea

Hi Julie,
I have tried various knee supports that I have bought myself but non of them help in fact most have caused more pain because of the swelling around the knee.
However I am having regular physio now to try and strenghten the muscles around my knees so that I can go another year with out having a replacement and when I do have one there'll be some good muscle there to hold it.
As part of this the physio has shown me how to move my kneecap slightly and tape it in place with zinc oxide plaster over a much softer plaster. Its brilliant, my knee doesn't grind so much now and there is not the awful pain on bending it . The other plus side is there's no tightness round the back of the knee as the plaster is like an X sort of shape just over the front of the knee so doesn't touch that tender part as the back. Therefore maybe taping would help if its a knee cap issue?
Best wishes
Sheila

Hi!
Thanks everyone for the replies. I saw my Rheumy guy a couple of weeks ago but didn't think at the time to ask about knee supports though he did say that it IS osteo in my knees (though I know that some years ago they were affected by the RA
I also see a sports injury specialist for massage for a dodgy back---NOT because I'm sporty!!! so will ask her to suggest some knee strengthening exercises next time I see her

Take care everyone & keep on smiling

Julie x
